  • Full Member

    To be a full member of APA you need a doctoral degree in psychology or a related field from: a regionally accredited institution; a school that achieved such accreditation within five years of the doctoral degree; or a school of similar standing outside of the United States. 


    Your degree needs to be based, in part, upon a psychological dissertation or other evidence of proficiency in psychological scholarship. If your degree is from an institution outside of the United States you’ll need to show U.S. equivalency.


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • Associate Member

    To be an associate member of APA you shall (a) have completed at least two years of graduate work in psychology in a regionally accredited graduate or professional school or (b) have a master's degree in psychology from a regionally accredited graduate or professional school.


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • International Affiliate

    Psychologists outside the United States and Canada who are members of the national psychology association in the country in which they reside are eligible to join APA as International Affiliates. 


    As an international affiliate, you will join psychologists from more than 145 countries in being eligible to take advantage of APA member benefits for products and services and to receive news and specialized international information. Psychologists from low-income countries are eligible for a special rate. 


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • Graduate Student Member

    To be a graduate student member of APA you need to be enrolled in a graduate-level program in psychology or another related field.


    APA membership is effective from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • Undergraduate Student Affiliate

    Anyone studying psychology as an undergraduate student is welcome to join APA as an undergraduate student affiliate. 


    Undergraduate student affiliates are also welcome, for a small additional fee, to join the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS), a dynamic student-run organization that helps members prepare for their careers.


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • High School Student Affiliate

    APA has made a special affiliate program just for high school students. Anyone enrolled as a high school student can become an affiliate of APA.

  • Community College Teacher Affiliate

    Psychology teachers at community colleges are invited to join APA as community college teacher affiliates. As a community college teacher affiliate, you will join your colleagues participating in Psychology Teachers in Community Colleges (PT@CC), a group of members and affiliates of APA established in 2001. Its elected executive committee represents the interests of community college psychology teachers.


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • High School Teacher Affiliate

    Teachers of high school psychology who are not eligible to become APA members may become high school teacher affiliates. As a high school teacher affiliate of APA, you'll automatically become a member of Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS), the national organization representing the needs of psychology teachers at the high school level. TOPSS priorities include developing materials and resources for high school psychology, networking among all teaching levels of psychology and providing a visible, national voice for secondary school teachers of psychology.


    APA membership is effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. If you join APA between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, you will enjoy membership through the next calendar year.

  • Life Status Member

    Any member who has reached the age of 65 and has belonged to APA for a total of 25 years may choose to begin the dues-reduction process, culminating in dues exception. Any member who, regardless of age or length of membership, has been adjudged totally and permanently disabled may choose to become exempt from dues.


    You must notify APA Member Services to begin the process.
